A doula is a trained, knowledgeable, experienced labor companion who provides a woman and her co-parent with continuous emotional support; physical comfort measures during labor and delivery; assistance in making medical decisions before, during, and after childbirth; and in making the birth experience a joyous one for all involved.
A doula recognizes birth as a key experience that a woman will remember all her life. She understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor. She assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their plans and wishes for the birth experience.
The doula provides emotional support; physical comfort measures; an objective viewpoint; and assistance to the woman in getting the information she needs to make decisions that reflect the desires of the woman and her partner. She facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner, and clinical care providers. She nurtures and protects a woman's memory of her birth experience.
The presence of a doula during labor and delivery is recognized for its contribution to improved physical outcomes; reduced complications and increased emotional well being of parents and infants.
Touch Communication or Infant Massage
Touch Communication, better known as infant massage, is a fabulous way for parents, especially fathers, to bond with their infant. A mother may often have many ways by which she connects with her infant. Massage for infants has a great deal to with non-verbal communication. Touch Communication is a way for parents to learn how to listen to their infant and for acquainting the infant of their new bodies.
